Types of Disability Benefits

If you are disabled and cannot work, it is sometimes difficult to understand the varying benefits to which you may be entitled. When you contact The Golden Law Group, our Florida attorneys will review your options and help you determine what types of aid you may qualify for.

In addition to the basic assistance provided through Social Security Disability (SSD) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), there are certain benefits available exclusively to children and other relatives.

Benefits for Family Members

When you cannot work, your family also suffers from the loss of your income. Fortunately, your spouse and dependents may apply for aid if you have been approved for SSD. In some cases, they may receive up to half the amount of your monthly benefit payments. Eligible family members can include:

  • Current or former spouses over the age of 62
  • Spouses caring for disabled or minor (aged 16 or younger) children
  • Children who are unmarried and below the age of 18
  • Adult children who became disabled before the age of 22

Disabled minor children may also be entitled to SSI benefits, provided your family meets certain basic economic criteria. When considering these claims, the Social Security Administration will consider the income and resources of all members in your household.

Survivor Benefits

If you are a widow or widower and your deceased spouse paid into the Social Security system, you may qualify for SSD. However, claimants must meet several basic criteria. Only those who were married for a period of more than nine months and are aged 50 or older can be considered.
